Registered Electrical Apprentice (Years 1-4)

Directly Reports to: Project Foreman
Location: Varies per job site
Hours of Operation: 6am – 2pm (Hours may vary per job site)

Basic Duties/Responsibilities for 1-4 Year

  • Be at jobsite at start time and ready to go.  (Not arriving at start time.)
  • Assist foreman. [open gang box, unchain ladders, etc.]
  • Receive instruction for daily tasks.  Understand and perform directed tasks.
  • Help maintain materials and tools:
    • Keep materials organized.
    • Inform foreman when materials are getting low.
    • Help keep jobsite clean on daily basis.
  • Begin to acquire tools for the electrical trade.
  • Register and attend a Maryland Apprenticeship program (IEC, ABC, Carroll County, etc.). Maintain proper attendance and above average grade point.
  • Learn and understand safety on construction jobsites.
  • Maintain a clean appearance and professional attitude.

Year 2 Apprentice:

Apprentice will be advancing to new tasks.  Apprentice should be pulling wire in conduits and “trimming out” – installing switches, receptacles and light fixtures.

  • Apply knowledge gained from Year 1.
  • Continue to build electrical toolbox.
  • Register and start year 2 of IEC schooling. Maintain proper attendance and above average grade point.
  • Register and attend any electrical seminars offered by company.

Year 3 Apprentice:

Apprentice assumes more responsibility on the job.  Conduit bending skills are ready to be passed on to green (new) helpers.  Apprentice will be wiring equipment (heating and cooling units) and “landing” panels (terminating wires on lugs and circuit breakers.)

Year 4 Apprentice:

Apprentice assumes increased responsibilities on the job.  Apprentice may be in charge of a crew in the area of the building he is working on – reading blueprints and selecting appropriate material.  Apprentice may not be a journeyman yet, but learning supervisory skills is an important lesson.  The equipment and lighting fixtures installed by apprentice will be larger and specialized. 

Additional Year 3 & 4 Apprentice Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Implement applications learned from Year 1 & 2.
  • Continue to build electrical toolbox.
  • Register and start year 3 & 4 of IEC schooling, maintain proper attendance and above average grade point.
  • Register and attend any electrical seminars offered by company.
  • Begin to take on added responsibility by performing electrical applications.
  • Develop a solid understanding of electrical material.
  • Develop a beginning understanding of blueprints. (Symbols & layout.)

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Be legally able to work in the United States.
  • Be able to follow directions.
  • Be able to give directions.
  • Be able to concentrate on tasks and learn repeating tasks.
  • Moderate to advance understanding of tools, material and fasteners.
  • Punctuality & dependability.
  • The ability to understand and communicate information.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from any of our job sites and Apprenticeship classes

Education and Experience:

  • No experience necessary to enroll in Year 1.
  • MUST be willing to enroll in the Maryland State Apprenticeship Program.

Physical Requirements:  

  • Must be able to bend and stretch overhead easily.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of time in the extreme heat or cold.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
  • Have good hand eye coordination and endurance.
  • Have good mobility (for shoveling, sweeping, etc.)
